What it does for a child

A dental emergency is one of the most stressful moments a parent can face, and usually one of the least expected. Whether it's a knocked-out tooth, a bad fall, a cracked tooth, or sudden severe pain, knowing that you can reach someone immediately makes all the difference. We keep same-day availability for emergencies and our on-call doctor is reachable after hours so you are never left figuring it out alone.

Why it matters for kids

With dental emergencies, timing is everything. A knocked-out permanent tooth has the best chance of survival when acted on within the hour. Infections left untreated can spread quickly. Cracked teeth that seem minor can involve more than meets the eye. Getting the right guidance immediately, whether that's coming straight in or knowing what to do at home in the next few minutes, changes outcomes.

What to expect

Call us first at (913) 685-9990. During office hours we will do everything we can to see your child the same day. After hours, leave a voicemail and our on-call doctor will return your call as quickly as possible. When you call, we will triage your situation over the phone, give you immediate guidance on what to do right now, and get your child in as fast as possible. For emergencies involving facial trauma, head injury, or anything beyond the teeth, go directly to the emergency department first and call us when things have settled down.

FAQs

Honest answers to the questions parents ask us most. No judgment. Just the truth.

Note for all dental emergencies: If your child has experienced any kind of facial trauma, head injury, or medical emergency alongside a dental injury, go to the emergency department first. Call us once things have settled down and we'll take it from there.

What should I do if my child's tooth is knocked out?

For a baby tooth, don't try to put it back in. Just give us a call and we'll walk you through exactly what to do next. For a permanent tooth, time really matters. If you can, gently place the tooth back into the socket and have your child hold it there. If that isn't possible, drop it in a glass of cold milk and call us immediately. The faster we can act, the better the outcome.

What should I do if my child's tooth is cracked or broken?

Find the piece if you can, place it in milk, and give us a call. We'll help you figure out next steps based on what happened and how your child is feeling.

My child has a tooth growing behind another tooth. Is that an emergency?

This is actually more common than you'd think and usually not an emergency. These "shark teeth" tend to resolve on their own as the baby tooth falls out. If your child is experiencing significant discomfort, give us a call and we'll help determine the best course of action.
