Pulp Therapy
Care for the inside of the tooth that saves it from extraction and keeps development on track.

What it does for a child
Sometimes decay or injury reaches deep enough to affect the pulp, the living tissue inside the tooth containing the nerves and blood supply. Pulp therapy treats that affected tissue, preserving the tooth so it can continue doing its job until the permanent tooth is ready to take its place. Think of it as giving a tooth a second chance rather than giving up on it.
Why it matters for kids
Losing a baby tooth too early has real consequences for spacing, for speech, and for the development of the permanent tooth underneath. Pulp therapy lets us save the tooth when saving it is the right call, avoiding a chain of problems that early extraction can set in motion.
What to expect
Completed in a single 60-minute visit. We remove the affected tissue, treat the area with appropriate materials, and seal the tooth to protect it going forward. A crown is sometimes placed afterward for added strength, and we'll discuss that with you before we begin. Throughout the appointment, nitrous oxide and local anesthetic ensure your child feels nothing.
How we keep kids comfortable
We're deliberate about how we talk about this procedure. No alarming clinical language, just calm, age-appropriate explanation of what we're doing to help the tooth. Most children move through this appointment far more easily than their parents anticipated. We've seen a lot of relieved faces afterward.
FAQs
Honest answers to the questions parents ask us most. No judgment. Just the truth.
It's a related concept but a meaningfully different procedure. Adult root canals remove all pulp tissue from a permanent tooth. Pulp therapy in children is tailored to a developing tooth, with different goals, different materials, and a very different experience. We prefer to call it exactly what it is: care for the inside of the tooth.
No. We use both nitrous oxide and local anesthetic to make sure your child is completely comfortable before we begin. Most kids are surprised by how manageable it is.
Because keeping it is almost always better. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth and play a bigger role in development than most people realize. Pulp therapy lets us preserve the tooth and protect everything that depends on it.
