What it does for a child

An exam is how we catch small things before they become big ones. We check every tooth, the gums, the bite, how the jaw is developing, and we look for anything that might need attention now or down the road. Think of it as your child's smile getting a full report card.

Why it matters for kids

Children's mouths change fast. A tooth that looked fine six months ago can tell a completely different story today. Regular exams let us stay ahead of decay, track development, and spot habits or patterns early, when they're easiest to address. We also screen for tongue and lip ties, orthodontic concerns, and anything else that deserves a closer look.

What to expect

Dr. Matt or Dr. Tara will walk through every tooth methodically, check the gums and soft tissue, and take a good look at how everything is developing. We'll talk you through what we find before you leave. No surprises, no dentist-speak. Most appoitnments are done in well under 40 minutes.

How we keep kids comfortable

We narrate everything as we go in language your child actually understands. The mirror is a "magic mirror," the air is a "tooth dryer," the light is just a really bright flashlight. Nothing happens without an explanation first, and nothing is rushed.

FAQs

Honest answers to the questions parents ask us most. No judgment. Just the truth.

When should I bring my child in for their first visit?

By their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. We know that sounds early, but the first visit is less about cleaning and more about making sure development is on track and helping your child start building a positive relationship with the dentist. Oh, and it's complimentary for children 2 and under.

How often does my child need an exam?

very six months for most kids. Some children with higher cavity risk or active orthodontic concerns may benefit from more frequent visits, and we'll let you know if that's the case.

What happens if you find something at the exam?

We'll walk you through exactly what we found, what it means, and what the options are before you leave. Nothing gets scheduled without your understanding and consent. No surprises, ever.
